Good friends are hard to come by!

When I got married, I knew that my friendships would change. In my singleness, I had regular dinner dates with my friends, planned weekend outings, and always had time to catch up. When I got married, I still had my dinner dates, the weekend outings became fewer, but I still had some time to catch up. However, since having a baby, those things have drastically changed. I have to strategically plan my dinner dates, if I have enough energy to stay up past 9 p.m., and I have no time on weekends for anything other than cleaning up my house and taking care of K. Since becoming a mother, my BFF has turned to Baby and Family First.

My married friends with children completely understand my disappearing act. They performed the act themselves. However, I’m wondering if my single friends really understand. I have to admit that I have turned into one of those women who only talks about her baby and the latest “Mommy gadget.” I would be frustrated listening to me too if I didn’t have children.

However, I’m so glad that my sister-in-Christ over at Cooking Up Faith reminded me that it’s important to maintain our relationships. She uses Mary and Elizabeth’s relationship in Luke 1 as the example. In verse 39, Mary puts forth the effort to go and see about Elizabeth. Despite all that she’s going through with her unexpected pregnancy, she takes time out to visit Elizabeth. Imagine how they encouraged one another when Mary discovered that Elizabeth, too, was carrying a child? I know they had a great time swapping stories about the awesomeness of God.

Yes, it is more challenging to maintain relationships when you have a new baby at home, but the rewards are so great if we put forth the effort. I know that my friends helped me greatly right after I had the baby and battled a brief stint of PPD. Their visits and phone calls brightened my day. And, we have so many means of communicating with our friends today. Mary had to travel to Elizabeth’s town to talk to her. We can text, send Facebook messages, Tweet, send a card in the mail, or pick up the telephone. You never know. Your card, call or message could come at a time when they need it the most!

  1. You are so right about this because I myself lost all of my friends once I got married. It has been my prayer that my Lord will send me a true and faithful friend. Great post and a wonderful message…God BLESS you my sister.
