K at 3 1/2 months. This is the damage he can do!

Since becoming a mother, I’ve learned a huge lesson. Mommies don’t get embarrassed. I think it starts in the hospital because everything is exposed for everyone to see. I had a C-section, so my doctors have really seen it all. But, it starts in the hospital after you give birth and the nurses have to clean you up and change your bed pads. I remember when one of my doctors walked into my room and my full breast was exposed as I nursed my little one. He was so embarrassed. I didn’t flinch. I told him not to worry about it. No big deal because Mommies don’t get embarrassed.

This new “Mommy power” to not get embarrassed strengthens as your little one gets older too. Think about it. After you’ve been thrown up on a million times, pooped on, and peed on, how could a slip showing embarrass you? There have been Sundays when K’s thrown up all over my black suit. Try and get the image. I’m wearing a black suit and it’s covered in thick, white throw up. There have been days when K’s peed on my clothes while I was out. And let’s not get into the poop explosions, but no big deal because Mommies don’t get embarrassed.

After I gave birth, I wrestled with the worst acne of my life and my hair fell out in the front. I had patches in the front of my hair due to the sudden hormone change. I dealt with it for months. It’s just now growing back. However, after learning to live with being ugly for months, my patches are no big deal because Mommies don’t get embarrassed.

So, when I was at Bob Evans today after church and K threw up on the side of my mouth and all down my shirt and the young couple sitting across from us laughed hysterically, I didn’t cringe from embarrassment. I didn’t run and hide. I just shook it off and smiled because just as I learned, one day they, too, will learn that Mommies don’t get embarrassed.
