Our society is fascinated with superheroes.  So much so, there are tons of movies that focus on a superhero.  There are all of the Superman movies and versions of Batman.  There are The Green Hornet, Hancock, X-Men, I Am Number 4, and the list can go on and on.  The notion of a superhero even permeates that way we feel about ourselves.  We believe we are men and women of steel.  We’re invincible.  We can do it all.

Sadly, this way of thinking even affects our relationship with Christ.  We only call on him when we encounter those situations that remind us that we don’t have any superpowers and we can’t do it all.
However, I’m so glad that despite our humanness, we still have supernatural power working on our behalf.  In Joshua 5:13-15, Joshua has a vision of the Lord.  Joshua looks up and sees the Lord with sword drawn ready to go into battle. Because Joshua doesn’t immediately recognize him as the Lord, he asks him, “Are you one of us or one of our adversaries” (v. 13)?  The Lord tells him that he is neither, but the Commander of the Army of the Lord.  Immediately, Joshua falls with his face to the ground to worship.
I love this scripture because it reminds us there is a supernatural power working on our behalf.  We may not be physically entering into battle like Joshua, but everyday we’re in a spiritual battle and the Lord is there warring on our behalf (Ephesians 6:12).  Whether we’re battling sickness, ungodly habits, depression, or whatever, we have an army of hosts fighting on our behalf.  What encourages me the most about this text is that it reminds us that we’re not fighting any battle alone.  The Lord is with us.  He said he would never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-6).
When you become a mother, it’s very tempting to want to be superwoman.  However, that is not what God is calling us to be.  We don’t have to do it all.  We can’t it all.  Remember, there is an army of hosts fighting on your behalf, tearing down strongholds, beating back the hand of the enemy, protecting our homes and children and making our paths straight.  So we don’t have to be discouraged.  If you just can’t see it or just don’t understand, pray Elijah’s prayer that God will open your eyes to see the supernatural (2 Kings 6:17).

  1. Love this post! I am putting on My full Amour of Christ this Morning!!
    Ephesians 6:10-20
    New King James Version (NKJV)
    The Whole Armor of God
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[a] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

  2. So true! Such a great encouraging reminder. I sometimes think of the battle as being in the world, with the women I lead, not necessarily in my home. I don't want to be naive with my family and do war through prayer and teaching for them, too! Thanks for the heads up!
