Whether you are moving to get more space for your family, or your kids have flown the nest and you need to downsize, I’m sure you will be full of neat ideas as to how you can personalize your new property and start to make it a home. However, you may not be able to roll up your sleeves and start all the decorating straight away. There may be more important home-maintenance tasks and jobs that need working on first. This is to ensure that the property is up to scratch and that you won’t need to carry out any major maintenance in the near future.
Here are some of the most important home maintenance jobs that you need to do straight after moving day.
Get New Carpets
You will have probably looked around the house a couple of times before you do buy it and move in, so you probably have an idea as to what standard the carpets are up to. As carpets have to face a lot of wear and tear in every house, there’s a good chance that most of them in your new property need replacing. Ideally, you should do this before you move any of your furniture into the home so you don’t have to keep on moving large items around to lay the new carpets.
Upgrade To Double Glazing
If you move into a period property that still has original windows, you might want to replace them with modern double glazing. This will cut down on drafts, keep your home warmer, and will help to reduce your energy bills. There are lots of great bay bow window options that you might want to replace some basic windows with. Bay bow windows look especially great in front rooms, as they will look very attractive from the outside of the house.
Invest In New Insulation
You might want to look into the property’s insulation if you do not know how old it is. If it has been in the home a long time already, it could be time to replace it. This is a job that you don’t want to delay, especially in the winter months, as it will cause drafts to develop and could make your heating system a lot less efficient than what it should be.
Change The Locks
Don’t forget to change the locks on your new house as well. Even if the previous owner has given you all the sets of keys that they have, you can still never be 100% certain who else may have a copy that they don’t know about. For instance, if they ever gave a builder a spare set to work while they were at work, that builder could have got a copy cut for his apprentice. So, it’s best to always change the locks then you know exactly who has the keys to your home.
